This Zuni squash blossom and earring set is jaw-droppingly stunning. The silverwork and lapidary work that's wrapped up in this set is simply astounding. There are 6 blossoms per side, with each blossom having two curved rows of 7 needlepoint turquoise pieces, with a snake eye piece of turquoise in the middle. The design is used as a "crown" for the central naja pendant. Silver dots separate every piece of needlepoint turquoise, and twisted silver wire (rope) is used across the necklace. The silver beads (pearls) are handmade and strung on foxtail wire.
The earrings are a continuation of the blossom design. In their case, the blossoms are attached to classic screw back connectors.
From tip to tip, the necklace is 27" long.
The naja is 2 1/2" wide and about 3" tall.
The 12 blossoms are 1 3/4" long and 1" tall.
The silver beads are 5/16" in diameter and are strung on foxtail.
The necklace weighs 194 g.
The earrings are 1 5/8" long and 1" tall.
From the top of the screw back to the bottom of the earring is 2 1/8".
Together, the pair weighs 15.7 g.
The design and craftsmanship across both pieces clearly suggests a Zuni artisan created both pieces. However, they are not signed, which is not unusual for pieces from this era. This set was sourced from a private collection in Arizona.
